Trade Unwanted Giftcards For BETTER Ones With Brooke Yoakam
Brooke Yoakam is the founder of giftpocket, the digital wallet app that allows you to upload unwanted gift cards and trade them for ones that you do want and actually will use.
The app is an award-winning one with thousands of users trading gift cards across the United States and probably soon across the world
Giftpocket started all the way back when I was 12 years old in 2014. It just started from a simple problem. I would go shopping with my friends and every single time I would forget my gift cards at home.
Then every single Christmas my grandfather would give me gift cards to stores that I would never shop at.
I was getting super frustrated. I didn’t know what to do.
Around the same time I participate in the Young Entrepreneurs Academy and they’re like “what’s a problem you think you can solve”.
I realized that I have got to solve this gift card problem.
I always had my my phone, but never the giftcards and that inspired Giftpocket.
It is an app to manage all your gift cards from your phone so you can pay with them in stores or online. The best part is, say you get a gift card to a store that you don’t like you can exchange it to one of 250 plus brands on the app. We just released a send feature so you can also send gift cards to people all from the app.
What I Wish I Had Not Before I started.
I wish I would have known that I needed to have patience. I thought apps were made in days and that’s so far from the truth.
You have to figure out your whole entire idea then you have to meet with designers to design that. Then you have to meet with developers, then you have to do all this testing.
With Giftpocket we had to build a bunch of partnerships. It took us almost four years to launch the app and it was really hard work for years but I didn’t know that when I started.
Trend Jacking On Tiktok
We’ve been really focused on you know building the product and now we’re going for really unique organic growth strategies and working with influencers doing Tiktok.
I think the thing to we’ve really realized is that when there’s a trend on TikTok if Giftpocket can be a part of it, if there’s a sound that’s trending or a hashtag that’s trending, how can Giftpocket be a part of that.
We have seen a lot of growth, awareness and downloads from this. It does require you to really getting into the conversation of what people are talking about.
I think one of the benefits of having me as a teen founder going after a team demographic because I just through my daily life I understand the trends because that’s who I am i’m a teenager and then being able to apply that to Giftpocket.
I think has been very helpful and helps differentiate us from any other um gift card app out there.
Biggest Stuff Up Or Failure?
I think the one of the best and worst things that we’ve done in Giftpocket is we’ve focused so much on building a technology.
We have not had as much focus on marketing and kind of like, you build a product but you also have to get it into front of people’s hands and so I think one of the things that we are trying to shift our focus in 2021.
